An AI-Sports Partnership Race to The Finish Line:

OpenAI made its first big break into sports - and to everyone’s surprise, it did not involve the Big Four leagues of the U.S.

Instead, it was motorsports.

On February 28th, Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) - one of the most decorated racing teams in the Indy NXT and IndyCar Series - announced a “strategic research collaboration” with OpenAI. The partnership aims to elevate racing strategies across all CGR teams, enhance data mining capabilities, and maximize front-office performance. With the cherry on top, OpenAI will receive branding presence on all CGR race cars next season.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, noted that “racing has always been a proving ground for innovation” and “eager to see how advanced technology can support [CGR]’s expertise in pushing [racing] performance forward.”

But what really is the reason why Sam chose motorsports as his company’s first true sports partnership?

It’s All About Data.

Racing is arguably the most data-intensive sport. For example, each F1 car is equipped with ~300 sensors which generate 1.1M telemetry data points per second that are transmitted from the cars to the pit. It’s one of the few competitive sports that generates millions of unique data points while blending engineering, physics, and driving - three entirely different skill sets. This is the perfect racing track for OpenAI’s data-driven insights and advanced modeling to be truly disruptive:

  • Smarter race simulations: AI “digital racing twins” which analyze driver tendencies through pattern recognition and scenario analysis, providing personalized coaching and optimized racing strategy tailored to the driver’s racing style

  • Real-time strategies: Processes tire wear, fuel consumption, traffic, and weather conditions on the fly, pinpointing the perfect pit stop timing or when to conserve fuel vs. hit the nitro

  • Automating Knowledge-Based Tasks: CGR engineers will be able to automate tasks such as reporting and manual data analysis.

While it might seem like OpenAI is here to revolutionize IndyCar, surprisingly, they weren’t the first Gen AI company to enter motorsports.

CGR Was 1 Step Behind, But Now Is Taking 2 Steps Forward

CGR’s rival, Andretti Autosport, has been working with Zapata AI on generative AI tools: essentially helping engineers decide how hard the driver can push at any moment without jeopardizing the fuel window. To be competitive, CGR had to incorporate AI - fast.

But after a failed SPAC merger, Zapata AI ceased business operations in October 2024, leaving Andretti without its main AI partner.

Meanwhile, CGR just inked a partnership with the industry’s leading frontier model.

With various IndyCar teams already seeing a 12% increase in strategy accuracy and 98% efficiency in pit-stop timing from various AI-driven simulations, OpenAI’s cutting-edge LLMs could push these numbers even higher - cementing CGR’s spot on the podium for years to come.
